By now anyone who cares about it have been having a whale of a time in Ubisoft’s latest game from the Tom Clancy stable, The Division. Personally I think it’s bloody brilliant. The New York thye’ve created is familiar to anyone who’s been there – well apart from the perpetual winter, the devastation caused by a mutated smallpox virus, and armed gangs.
Shooters have been around for years, there are pages of them on every gamer store website; so producing a new one with something different is a real challenge – one that Ubisoft has easily overcome with The Division.
The main difference for me are the day – night cycle and the changing weather. Go into a subway on a clear day to rescue hostages and come out to streets caked in fog or swept by snow.
Add to this the fact that The Division takes place in an accurately reproduced New York and you find yourself playing in very believable world. This makes a big difference to the feel of the game.
It’s pretty easy to get yourself killed in The Division – if you don’t take advantage of any and every cover you can find. Enemies can take a lot more damage that you. But the game is nicely balanced so you never feel that a shootout is unfair.
I’m a co-op kinda guy so matchmaking scored pretty high for me. it’s easy and pretty varied.
Then there’s the Dark Zone, where all the PVP happens and where the best loot (powerful weapons, gear and mods) can be found. But take out another player and you are marked as ‘rouge’ – and easier to kill by others. Get taken out as rogue and your slayer gets your gear. So if you want to get out with your hard fought for loot, behave and watch your back.
So, if you don’t have The Division, I’d highly recommend it.
