The CERN incident brought magic back.
The government responded by treating all magicians as terrorists, and set up several new departments to process and deal with Magicians. The most public of these is the Magicians Assessment, Registration and Sentencing Unit, commonly known as the MARS unit. The MARS unit is responsible for overseeing all aspects of magician management apart from the capture, containment and control of magicians.
Girls who have magic are born with their powers. Some parents manage to hide the magical abilities of their daughters by dressing and referring to them as boys or living in isolation, or moving to the Recusant Zone in South London.
Boys develop their magical abilities between the ages of 18 and 21 and are regularly tested. The MARS unit is responsible for these tests and decisions made on magicians.
The Police service is now fully armed. In addition to their usual functions, the police are authorised to shoot on sight, and if necessary, kill any magician seen engaging in magic. The Police service are backed up by Lycus, a private security company contracted by the government to hunt down renegade magicians. Lycus carry out roadblocks and raids on hideouts and safe houses where magicians may be hiding.
Girl magicians are taken to The Secure Accommodation and Limitation of Enchantment for Magicians Unit, the Unit, SALEM. SALEM is a large pentagon shaped prison in the south west of England. Lycus have somehow developed a means of suppressing the magical ability of inmates. the prison can house around three thousand girls at any one time. Several girls a month die as a result of experimental surgery and research. The repressive nature of the regime make it difficult for rights activists to protest or speak out against the atrocities committed at the prison.
Many rights activists see the criminalisation and treatment of magicians as an attack on creativity and freedom; pointing to the fact that no magician has ever killed or injured anyone.
The reemergence of magic has seen a resurgence in mainstream religion. Although there is no evidence for the belief, most institutional religions and churches see magic as the work of Satan and an attack on society and social order itself. Attendance at religious services has increased as has the sale of religious talismans and symbols.
Product and corporate brands
Similarly there has been an increase in the use of product and corporate brands in public and private life. Product and corporate brands and logos can be found on clothing, all types of vehicles, home items and the fronts of houses. Academics believe this is due to the fact that magic and the ability to transform conventional reality, even temporarily, has threatened the perception of what most people take to be real and constant; things peoples identity and belief system depend upon. If reality is so fragile, then what can people use to reinforce their egos and identify with?
These fears have also led to a large number of vigilante gangs patrolling the streets looking for and assaulting anyone who might look odd or appear to be a magician.
As a result, it is rare to find anyone who dresses in a unique or creative manner, relying instead on conventional and popular brand clothing.
