Fans have long waited to see Spider-Man and Venom together again on the big screen, especially given their previous lackluster showdown in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Unfortunately, that possibility has seemed unlikely ever since Sony released their own Venom film in 2018. Despite being a surprise hit, grossing an impressive $855 million worldwide in spite of lousy reviews, the film had absolutely no connection to Spider-Man, MCU or otherwise, and previous quotes from both Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal made it clear that Sony’s Spider-Man spin-offs would exist in their own separate universe.
However, that hasn’t stopped fans from wondering if we’ll ever see Tom Holland‘s web-slinger face off against Tom Hardy‘s symbiote, and in a new interview with CinemaBlend, Feige has made it seem like such a crossover may be much more likely than we once thought. When asked about the two characters potentially sharing a film, Feige had the following to say:
I think probably it’s up to Sony. Sony has both those characters and, has Venom in their world. I don’t know what their plans are for another Venom or if they’re doing that. But it seems likely at some point.
That’s certainly not a no, but it also sounds like were it to happen it wouldn’t be down to Marvel Studios. It’s not the most encouraging of quotes, but it’s interesting to see Feige not outright dismissing the possibility of the characters meeting – and given how unlikely it once was Marvel would get to use Spidey in the MCU at all, you can never say never. It’s worth noting Feige makes no reference as to whether a potential crossover would involve Tom Holland, or if Sony would instead look to cast their own version of the web-slinger, but it’s hard to imagine the studio wouldn’t want to capitalize on Holland‘s popularity in the role should they move forward with a crossover.
Such a film would likely be years off, but the fact it’s not totally off the table is very exciting. Whatever happens, we’ll next see the MCU’s version of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home, which hits theaters on July 2nd.
