How to get rich by selling virtual items
The virtual universe of Oasis in Ernest Kline’s novel Ready Player One has an in-game currency referred to simply as ‘Coin’. The unusual thing about Coin is that it also has a real world value. In the game, Parzival, is on the hunt for three keys that will lead him to winning ownership of the entire Oasis. Parzival earns 100,000 coin by being the first to find the copper key and uses some of his winnings to buy a real world ‘Boot Suit’, a VR outfit that allows him to physically experience every punch, kick and shot.
Of course it’s been possible to purchase virtual in-game items for several years. Here’s a video made in 2016 that lists the top ten most expensive items purchased by January 2016. The list has hardly changes since then.
